A model of efficiency

The secret to Save-A-Lot's success lies in the simplicity and efficiency of our business model. Continually refined and tested for more than 28 years, we focus on driving down costs to give our independent retailers a competitive edge.

  • Smaller stores — The average Save-A-Lot store is 14,000 to 18,000 square feet, much smaller than a conventional grocery store. This reduces startup costs, inventory, occupancy and other operating costs.
  • Carefully selected assortment — We carry the food items shoppers buy most often. By carrying only 1,250 SKUs, we create unparalleled efficiencies throughout the supply chain, enabling our independent retailers to offer customers the lowest possible prices.
  • Exclusive brands —Our trademarked brands — packaged exclusively for Save-A-Lot — offer substantial savings because they don't carry the costly advertising and marketing expenses built into national brands.
  • Buying power — Our large network of stores, 4+ million weekly shoppers and consolidation of entire categories into single items gives Save-A-Lot great buying power.
  • Handling efficiencies —Our products are ordered, shipped and merchandised in custom cartons, cutting labor costs and streamlining operations. Plus, our shoppers bag their own groceries, further reducing labor costs.

Fully integrated distribution system

There's a lot more to Save-A-Lot than its stores. Independent retailers have the advantage of Save-A-Lot's self-distribution system. Everything ordered is delivered on a single truck from one of 15 strategically located distribution centers. Distribution centers are located near Save-A-Lot markets to maximize efficiencies. And the distribution centers are designed especially for Save-A-Lot's edited assortment model. These strategies help keep distribution costs low.
