Ritchie Casteel, president and chief executive officer of Save-A-Lot, has more than 40 years of experience in food retailing, merchandising and operations. In this role, he leads the strategic direction and growth of SUPERVALU’s hard discount retail chain and its more than 1,300 nationwide stores.
Casteel began his retail career as a courtesy clerk for Albertsons’ Southern California Division. He spent the next 33 years with the company in positions of increasing responsibility, primarily in the areas of merchandising and operations. He finished his tenure as vice president of operations for Albertsons’ Intermountain West Division.
Following his career at Albertsons, Casteel provided expertise and leadership to Associated Retail Stores of Salt Lake City, UT, ShopKo Stores of Green Bay, WI and Grocery Outlet of Berkley, CA. He served as director of sales and operations for Grocery Outlet from 2005-2009 where he worked closely with independent owner operators to improve sales, margin, shrink, standards, marketing, expense controls and financial balance.
Casteel brings tremendous experience to Save-A-Lot and will draw upon his vast knowledge working within a variety of formats, including conventional grocery, warehouse, drug and convenience stores.
Casteel studied business administration at San Fernando Valley State College. He and his wife of 41 years, Kathy, are relocating to St. Louis, MO from Sacramento, CA. They have three children and three grandchildren.
