ST. LOUIS, Dec. 15, 2011 – Save-A-Lot, one of the nation's leading hard discount, edited assortment grocery chains and a division of SUPERVALU (NYSE: SVU), today announced the opening of a new Save-A-Lot store on the Menominee Indian Reservation in Keshena, Wis. There are currently 15 other Save-A-Lot stores located in Wisconsin.
Keshena’s Save-A-Lot is located at W2818 Warrington Rd. It is owned and operated by the Menominee Tribal Council of Wisconsin. To celebrate the new store, the Tribe hosted a grand opening ceremony today that featured a Menominee Prayer, remarks by Menominee Tribal Chairman Randal Chevalier and M.I.E.D.A Chairman Bruce Pecore, a ribbon-cutting ceremony and a special store tour. Members of the Menominee Tribal Legislature, M.I.E.D.A Board, SMET Construction, Menominee Chamber of Commerce and Shawano Chamber of Commerce were in attendance.
The Keshena store underscores Save-A-Lot’s strategy to identify unique opportunities to help meet its growth plans, and represents the first Save-A-Lot licensed by an Indian tribe.
In 2010, the grocery retailer partnered with grocery retailer Rafael Ortega to form a new company, Adventure Supermarkets LL, which operates six stores in the Houston and south Texas region under a co-branded format, “El Ahorro Save-A-Lot.” Today, Save-A-Lot has approximately 1,300 stores in 39 states and the Caribbean and has announced its intent to expand the number to 2,400 in the coming years.
“Save-A-Lot is committed to bringing fresh produce, dairy and USDA-inspected meat, as well as other essential grocery and household items to shoppers at an affordable price — typically up to 40 percent less than traditional grocers,” says Ron Munson, business unit director, Save-A-Lot stores. “We look forward to working with the Menominee Tribal Council to serve customers at the new Keshena Save-A-Lot store.”
