Store is part of expansion throughout Alabama over the next year
ST. LOUIS, August 19, 2010 – Save-A-Lot, one of the nation's leading hard discount, limited assortment grocery chains and a division of SUPERVALU (NYSE: SVU), has extended its commitment to bringing fresh produce, dairy and meats to neighborhoods in need of a full grocery store with the opening of its new store in Bessemer. Save-A-Lot is proud to bring access to a full grocery store to the citizens of Bessemer, which has been without one since other chains slowly pulled out of the community over the past few years.
“We are thrilled to celebrate the opening of this new Save-A-Lot Food Store,” said Mayor Edward E. May. “Before this store opened, Bessemer residents often had to travel to neighboring towns for fresh produce and other grocery items. Now we will be able to just run up the street for our food needs.”
The new location in West Towne Center Plaza is part of major expansion planned throughout the state.
“As a value-minded company, Save-A-Lot is committed to offering fresh produce, dairy and meat to shoppers who not only need access to these food items, but also want them at an affordable price – typically up to 40 percent less than traditional grocers,” said Bill Shaner, president and CEO. “We look forward to welcoming our shoppers into our Bessemer store.”
In honor of the store opening, Save-A-Lot is donating $5,000 in gift cards to the United Way Community Food Bank, which services many pantries and hunger relief organizations throughout Birmingham, including Bessemer.
“We are honored to receive this generous donation from Save-A-Lot,” said Larry Logan, executive director of the United Way Community Food Bank. “With this donation, we will be able to purchase 12,000 pounds of food and feed hundreds of families.”
This store opening is part of the company’s overall growth initiative, which includes a plan to double the number of U.S. stores over the next five years.

About the United Way Community Food Bank
Founded in 1982, the United Way Community Food Bank has a twenty-eight year presence in Central Alabama. The food bank operates as a central clearinghouse for collecting food that might otherwise be wasted. The food bank solicits and receives both new and commercially excess but fully edible food from multiple food industry sources, and in turn distributes that food to various nonprofits in the community. Those agencies include emergency food pantries, soup kitchens, residential programs, and snack programs. In turn, the agencies that receive food from the food bank must agree to distribute that food to the needy free of charge.
The United Way Food Bank serves twelve counties in Central Alabama, and in 2009 distributed approximately 7.1 million pounds of food in the community.
