SAVE-A-LOT OPENS NEW DURHAM, N.C., STORE

ST. LOUIS, Sept. 26, 2012 – Save-A-Lot, one of the nation's leading hard-discount, carefully selected assortment grocery chains and a wholly owned subsidiary of SUPERVALU (NYSE: SVU), today announced the opening of its new store at 812 Liberty St. in Durham, N.C., on Sept. 27.

A grand opening event will be held at the new Durham store at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 27. Ceremony attendees will include Durham Mayor William V. Bell; Kevin Dick, City of Durham Economic and Workforce Development director; Lisa Pullen Davis, Ph.D., MSPH, Durham Diabetes Coalition senior project director; city and county officials and community leaders.

“Save-A-Lot is committed to offering fresh produce, dairy and USDA-inspected meat, as well as other essential grocery and household items to shoppers at an affordable price – typically up to 40 percent less than traditional grocery stores,” says Myron Ball, Save-A-Lot business unit director. “We look forward to welcoming shoppers to our new Durham store.”

"This is a grand occasion for Northeast Central Durham because we have been working with the community and partners for literally decades to create more retail shopping opportunities - and specifically additional grocery stores - in the neighborhood,” says Dick. “The benefits of this new Save-A-Lot grocery store extend beyond the immediate neighborhood, resulting in many contracting and job opportunities for residents throughout Northeast Central Durham. Also, Save-A-Lot's willingness to be a strong community partner should benefit the entire community as well.”

In honor of the new store opening, Save-A-Lot is making a $5,000 donation to the Durham Diabetes Coalition to support program activities such as cooking classes, nutrition education, exercise programs and diabetes support groups and tips to better manage the disease.

“Our partnership with Save-A-Lot will move the needle toward raising awareness of diabetes in the community,” Pullen Davis. “We are thrilled to work with Save-A-Lot to help people get the information and care they need to reduce health complications due to diabetes.”

Each Save-A-Lot store carries a carefully selected assortment of 1,200 to 1,500 of the most popular, in-demand everyday grocery essentials, including farm-fresh fruits and vegetables, USDA-inspected meats, dairy products, bakery goods, shelf-ready and frozen foods, household goods, pet food, baby, and health and beauty care products. Save-A-Lot stores, which average about 15,000 square feet, feature a wide range of high-quality brands, including Save-A-Lot Today™, Coburn Farms® and Tipton Grove™, produced exclusively for Save-A-Lot by many of the country’s leading food manufacturers.
