SAVE-A-LOT TO OPEN FIRST STORE IN MINNESOTA

ST. LOUIS -- April 15, 2004 -- Soon, St. Michael, Minnesota, shoppers can save up to 40 percent on groceries and find incredible $1 general merchandise buys on everyday items at their new Save-A-Lot Food Store, opening on Wednesday, April 21 at 8 a.m. The store will be located at 308 Central Avenue East.

"St. Michael shoppers will be pleasantly surprised when they first visit the store and experience Save-A-Lot's value equation - great food at great prices!" said Dan Kimack, Manager of Corporate Communications. "And our Dollar Department provides a treasure hunt shopping experience and promises shocking values on general merchandise items shoppers buy each day."

He added, "Save-A-Lot is a value shopper's utopia. Because of our edited-assortment method of retailing and the incredible buying power of more than 1,000 stores, Save-A-Lot Food Stores offer the highest quality groceries - many under our own exclusive brands - at terrific, 40 percent savings. Savings in the Dollar Department on general merchandise, contemporary seasons goods and consumables are just as incredible."

Save-A-Lot is the nation's fastest growing edited assortment grocery chain in the U.S. with more than 1,000 stores in 37 states. The company has achieved its growth and success by developing a different way of retailing - its stores offer customers the most popular size and variety of the most frequently purchased grocery items. The edited assortment of products, smaller size of the stores and incredible buying power work together to reduce operating expenses. These savings are passed on to the customer through lower prices.

The smaller store size - about 12,000 - 15,000-square-feet - also makes shopping more convenient. "Our store size allows customers to have a quick and easy shopping experience," Kimack said. "And our edited-assortment format means that we've already done some of the shopping for our customers. We know they expect to find great food at great prices."

Save-A-Lot carries both selected national brand items and exclusive label products. To ensure that Save-A-Lot's exclusive label products are as good or better than name brand items, the company has a test kitchen, a full-time economist and rigorous quality assurance procedures. "If a product does not meet Save-A-Lot's standards for top quality, we won't carry it," Kimack said.

The new St. Michael store will carry about 1,250 of the most frequently purchased grocery items, including fresh meat, fruits and vegetables, dairy products, canned goods and packaged items, frozen foods and more, plus non-food items like health and beauty care. The dollar department will include unique items, including, kitchen needs, plasticware, clothing, cosmetics, seasonal gifts and decorations, children's toys, housewares and hardware.

The store will be operated by Coborn's, Inc. from St. Cloud, Minnesota which also operate Save-A-Lot stores in Dubuque, Iowa and Freeport, Illinois. Nathan Tykwinski will manage the store and a staff of about 20 employees. The store will be open Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and on Sunday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
