Shopping List
St. Louis, November 3, 2008 – Save-A-Lot food stores donated truckloads of groceries on
Oct. 31 and Nov. 1 to Feeding America of Tampa Bay and Feeding America
of Orlando, formerly America’s Second Harvest of Tampa Bay and Orlando,
respectively, in an effort to assist local families in need during
these difficult economic times.
Save-A-Lot is one of the nation’s leading extreme value, edited
assortment grocery chains with nearly 1,200 stores nationwide.
Save-A-Lot’s value equation of great food, great prices, and great
people allows shoppers to save up to 40 percent compared to
conventional grocery stores.
Save-A-Lot delivered via 18-wheeler more than 13,000 units of
perishable and non-perishable products to the food banks. Both
organizations received the following items: 900 jars of peanut butter,
1,632 cans of corn, 2,016 cans of tuna, 960 units of spaghetti and
meatballs, and 1,080 boxes of rice at an estimated retail value of
$10,000. The food drop comes almost one month in advance of holiday
food drives.
A good corporate citizen for 25 years, Save-A-Lot operates 100 stores
in Florida. “Save-A-Lot is committed to help meet the needs of the
communities it serves, and we’re pleased to partner with Feeding
America of Tampa Bay and Feeding America of Orlando,” said Bill Shaner,
President and Chief Executive Officer of Save-A-Lot. “We have a strong,
long-standing presence in Central Florida which positions us to help
fight against a potential shortage for these food banks as they serve
their communities. During these difficult economic times, Save-A-Lot,
our associates, and our customers look forward to making a real
difference through this exciting partnership.”
In addition to the food drop Save-A-Lot will launch an in-store
fundraising program for Feeding America of Tampa Bay and Orlando.
Starting Nov. 1, customers and associates were able to purchase special
$2 “bags” of groceries to benefit their communities’ needy families.
Money raised will be collected and product will be donated to Feeding
America during the holiday season.
“We’re excited to work with a company like Save-A-Lot and we’re
impressed with their proven commitment to not only serve but also
provide a helping hand to the communities where they do business,” said
Mark Sutherland, Resource Development Director of Feeding America of
Tampa Bay.
“Every penny earned from this program will go toward providing good,
healthy, and nutritious foods to needy families,” said Kristen Jersey
Langan, Product Sourcing Manager of Feeding America of Orlando. "It’s
because companies like Save-A-Lot step up to the plate and donate time
and food that we are successful.”
